Temple Beth Am welcomes Anat Hoffman, dynamic leader of the Israel Religious Action Center, as our 2010 Scholar-in-Residence. Anat is internationally recognized as a leading voice for peace and transformation in Israel. Anat is a founding member of Women of the Wall and she works to advance religious pluralism and social justice for minorities in Israel.

This weekend of learning is made possible by a generous gift from Lillian and Charles (z”l) Kaplan.
All programs will take place at Temple Beth Am.

Anat will share her vision of Israel as a religiously and ethnically pluralistic society struggling to maintain its character as a Jewish State. She will introduce the important work of the Israel Religious Action Center.

Women of the Wall, an organization that Anat cofounded, works for equal religious rights for women in Israel. Anat will focus on the challenges women face in Israel and across the Middle East. She will recommend actions that we can take to ensure equal rights in the Jewish state.

Are Reform voices being heard in Israel? Do they make a real difference when it comes to issues such as who is a Jew, socioeconomic disparities, and discrimination? Join us for a dialogue about why our engagement with the Reform movement in Israel matters.

“An Opposition Politician Teaches Israel 101”
Sunday, February 21, 10-11:30 AM

A progressive activist’s perspective on the Israeli political system and current security concerns. Anat battled right-wing and Orthodox authorities under Jerusalem Mayor Ehud Olmert during her 14-year stint on the Jerusalem City Council. She will offer a special “Israeli Politics 101” and entertain questions about Israel’s security.

Praying in Her Own Voice: Film & Discussion

In anticipation of our Scholar-in-Residence weekend (February 19-21) with Anat Hoffman, Beth Am and AJC Seattle Jewish Film Festival offer a special screening of Praying in her Own Voice. This powerful film documents the courageous struggle of the famed “Women of the Wall” movement, of which Anat Hoffman was a founder.

This group has spearheaded the battle for female equality in the religious world. They have challenged the Israeli government and the entire Jewish world through colorful protests and their unstoppable legal battle. Learn more about the film here. Free and open the public.
