Shalom! On behalf of the Rabbis, TBA Religious School Board, and BAPA, we are excited for the upcoming 2010-2011 Religious School year. We look forward to a great new year together!

In order to be more environmentally responsible, we did not send home hard copies of our Religious School Handbook this year. However, it is available below in pdf form. If you would like a hard copy, please contact the office and we would be happy to send you one.

Our Registration Packet for 2010-2011 includes the following documents. Feel free to download them here or call the office to request copies:

  1. Religious School Class Times and Locations
  2. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's)
  3. Registration Form ( due July 1 to avoid a late fee* )
  4. Confidential Health History & Permission Form ( due July 1 )
  5. Fee Payment Form ( due July 1 )
  6. Beth Am Parent Association (BAPA) Cover Letter and Volunteer Participation Forms
  7. Religious School Calendar for 2010-2011, Part 1 and Part 2 (Special Events)

Registration for the 2010-11 school year is due July 1, 2010. Please send your registration forms to the Temple office. Because late registrations impact our ability to plan effectively, we require a $100 per child late fee for all registrations postmarked after July 1, 2010 (*except for new member families and families who are registering their children for our Religious School for the first time). Please see the information in the FAQ's sheet and the 2010-2011 Religious School Handbook about payment plans and scholarships so financial issues do not prevent you from returning your registration forms in a timely manner. Click here to download the entire Religious School Handbook.

We want to assure you that confidential information on these forms remains confidential. Only those people who must see your forms ever have contact with them. We take your trust seriously and hope that you will share with us whatever we need to know to make your child’s year the best it can be.

Please note that only children of members may enroll, with the exception of 9th – 12th graders. New students will be assigned to classes based on their age and corresponding school grade. New students in grades 4 through 6 will need to meet with the Director of Education, Rabbi Janine Schloss, or the Assistant Director of Education, Rabbi Allison Flash, to determine the most appropriate placement for the Hebrew classes.

For more information or if you have any questions, please contact Rabbi Janine Schloss, Director of Education, 206-525-0915 x 216, or Rabbi Allison Flash, Assistant Director of Education, 206-525-0915 x 220, or Amber, 206-525-0915 x 200.

Students with Special Needs

Temple Beth Am strives to have a Religious School program that allows every Jewish child to receive a Jewish education. For the past three years we have been working towards this goal by helping teachers make needed adaptations and/or changes to meet the individual needs of specific children in their classrooms. The teachers and Madrichim (teaching assistants) receive training to work with children with learning or behavioral needs, medical challenges, gifted abilities, Day School backgrounds, and anyone else whose individual needs have been brought to our attention. Individually assigned and trained Madrichim are also available as needed so that all children can be included in regular Religious School classes. These individually assigned Madrichim are supervised by the classroom teachers, Dorothy Kahn, our Madrichim Coordinator, and Jeannette Cohen, our Child Support Coordinator.

All parents of students in our Religious School, as well as parents of students with special needs, are welcome to make an appointment with the Director of Education or the Assistant Director of Education to discuss how we can best meet the needs of their child. Families are also welcome to consult with Jeannette Cohen, our Child Support Coordinator, to help find ways in which their children can be most successful in the classroom. The information shared with us is completely confidential and will only be shared with the Rabbis, Jeannette Cohen, and – if necessary – the child’s teacher(s).

For more information please contact the Director of Education, Rabbi Janine Schloss, 206-525-0915 x 216, or the Assistant Director of Education, Rabbi Allison Flash, 206-525-0915 x 220.

Books, Materials, and Technology Fee
There is a Books, Materials, and Technology Fee of $70 per year per student for all grades. This fee pays for required textbooks for all students and other necessary materials for class. We are also continuing to invest in laptops and LCD projectors so that we can use educational technology in our classrooms. Jewish education has entered the 21st century!

Scholarships and Payment Plans
Temple Beth Am has scholarship funds available to help families meet the costs of Religious School. We are especially thankful for a grant from the Alfred and Tillie Shemanski Testamentary Trust fund which created the Shemanski Children’s Education fund. Families are also invited to work out a payment plan if it is not possible for them to pay all of the fees at the beginning of the year. If parents are interested in applying for money from this fund or setting up a payment plan, please contact Esther Herst, our Executive Director, at 206-525-0915 x 208.

Other Fees

Snack Fee
There is a Snack Fee of $20 per year per student for 3 year olds through 2nd graders. Every Sunday morning these students will be served apple juice and challah. If a student has food allergies, please make sure that it is clearly described on the Confidential Health History and Permission form. (Please note that snack is no longer served to the 3rd - 7th graders on Sunday morning. They will still have a chance to socialize during recess and passing time, but they will not be given a formal snack.) The snack fee is included in the tuition for the 3 year olds through 2nd graders.

Optional Pizza Dinner
The optional pizza dinners take place on Tuesday evenings from 5:30 – 6:15 PM in the Social Hall and all students who attend Tuesday night classes are invited to attend. The cost for dinner is $160 per student for the school year if paid in advance. Dinner includes two slices of pizza, salad and a drink. Students can also walk in on any given night and pay $6 to enjoy dinner. We intend to continue with the popular Pagliacci pizza this year. (If students will “need” more than two slices of pizza for dinner, parents are welcome to send in an extra $80 per extra slice for the school year.)
