Bring your own lunch and join Rabbi Jack Schlachter, the “Physics Rabbi”, on Tuesday, May 27, at 12:30 PM for his talk at Beth Am! In June 1954, Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) Chairman Lewis Strauss revoked the security clearance of Dr. J. Robert Oppenheimer, who had been the scientific leader of the Manhattan Project that developed the first atomic bombs. Rabbi Jack will explore how their respective Jewish identities may have contributed to the revocation. Seeing the movie Oppenheimer is not a prerequisite for the talk, but it can be useful to view the film in advance for those who are interested.
About the speaker:
Jack Shlachter is both a physicist and an ordained rabbi who worked at Los Alamos National Laboratory and other organizations for over thirty years. He led The Jewish Center of The Moriches, NY, during his years at Brookhaven and is currently the rabbi of HaMakom in Santa Fe, N,M and the Los Alamos Jewish Center.
