We are excited to offer 10 new Hearth Group experiences for our members this fall. Below are descriptions of  these groups, which range from Anti-racism and Introspection to Jewish Parenting to Virtual Board Games!

Before you sign up, please be sure to check the scheduled meeting dates and confirm that you will be available to meet on those days and times. As group space is limited, you can participate in only one group at a time. You’ll be asked to indicate up to three groups that you would like to participate in. We will let you know by e-mail which group you’ve been placed in. Soul: Bet Tefillah, House of Prayer

Only twice a year do we hold our High Holiday prayer books (machzorim) in our hands. Yet our Reform prayer books are full of interesting, informative and inspiring words. They contain thought-provoking essays, teaching texts and footnotes that augment our prayers. This hearth group will read and discuss selected readings from these books. Our goal is to extend the transformative power of this year’s High Holidays, heighten the experience of next year’s services, and learn more about Judaism. How do we keep promises made during the holidays? How do we deal with problematic prayers? Why were these prayers chosen? Let’s learn what our machzorim have to teach us by drawing on the materials that the editors have provided.

Judaism teaches that from the first moment of Creation, words create worlds. It’s not a surprise, then, that so many of us at TBA love the written word. Interested in seeing what it takes to get a novel drafted? Looking to polish your short stories? Ready to get to work on your memoir? Need some D&D campaign worldbuilding support? This any-genre writing group will be crafted to suit the needs of the attendees with the goal of fostering community among literary-based creatives at Temple Beth Am.

Mondays from 7:00-8:30 PM on Zoom. Meeting dates:  10/25, 11/1, 11/8, 11/15, 11/22, 11/29, 12/6, 12/13.

Mind: Bet Midrash, House of Study

Our purpose in this group is to commit to being anti-racist in a way that reflects our Judaism so that we will show up for BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color). Guided by Layla Saad’s powerful Me and White Supremacy, we will begin the inner work required to achieve a deeper understanding of structural racism. In a safe space participants will be encouraged to share courageous conversations on a wide range of uncomfortable topics.

Thursdays from 7:00-8:30 PM on Zoom.  Meeting dates:  11/18, 12/16, 1/6, 1/20, 2/3, 2/17, 3/3.

Let’s explore Jewish twentieth-century musical composers and lyricists together…. We will consider what prompted/drove/allowed them to excel and be such an outsized success on the Broadway stage.  What was it about their collaborations that hit such a nerve and highlighted the issues of their days?  (and still in ours too).  How did their own Jewish experience impact their work? Connect with the melodies, lyrics and people that shaped musical theater.

Tuesdays from 7:00-8:30 PM on Zoom. Meeting dates:  11/2, 11/9, 11/16, 11/23, 11/30, 12/7, 12/14, 12/21.
